The Wine:
From the mountains of southern Spain, an anytime Monastrell. Dark in colour, with a nose of fresh fruit; hints of cherries, raspberries and eucalyptus. Fruity on the palate, balanced by lovely tannins. Good acidity, solid structure and a nice herbal edge.
On the nose, aromas of forest fruits such as blackberries and raspberries, accompanied by balsamic notes and a hint of liquorice. On the palate, it is rounded, with sweet and mature tannins, while its balanced acidity imparts freshness and vivacity, a light red wine perfect for discovering Monastrell at its most joyful and accessible.
Tragolargo is a pleasant and easy to drink wine, which conveys the variety’s character.
The Producer:
Casa Balaguer is a third generation estate in Alicante working organically and biodynamically. All grapes are hand-harvested, fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged in a range of vessels including stainless steel, wood, concrete and clay.
The Tragolargo red is Monastrell (Mourvedre) made with no added sulphur from bush vines 700m above sea level.
The grapes used to make the Tragolargo wine come from plots in Villena, Alicante. The grapes ferment with their native yeasts and with 30% of the stalks, adding a note of freshness which, combined with its youth and lack of any aging process, results in a juicy and very fruity wine.
Food Pairing:
Great on its own, or happily paired with most foods:
-Pork: Roasted pork or crispy Pork Belly to complement the wine’s acidity.
-Mediterranean Dishes: Classic Spanish Paella, especially rice dishes featuring rabbit.
-Rich Pastas: Tomato-based Bolognese or hearty meatballs.
-BBQ & Burgers: Gourmet burgers or smokey barbecue meats.
-Tapas: A charcuterie board featuring Jamón Ibérico, Marcona almonds, and creamy Manchego Cheese
