Spier Signature Shiraz 2021

The Wine:

Shimmering a dark ruby red in the glass, and delighting the nose and palate with spciy notes surrouded by fruity plums and light nuances of caramelised sugar. This South African (Stellenbosch) Shiraz is medium to full-bodied, dry and rich. Pleasantly soft and supple tannins, balanced acidity and a creamy finish make this uncomplicated red wine a pleasure on its own, but it is also an excellent accompaniment to spicy dishes or a nice steak. Partial oak-aging adds length and refinement.

Ripe red and black berries dance alongside vibrant plum flavours, enhanced by a refreshing hint of spice.

Harvested from Stellenbosch vines, the 2021 Shiraz grapes were fermented in stainless steel for 12 days whilst 20% was moved to French oak barrels, then blended back together after a year.

With a winemaking legacy dating back to 1692, Spier Wine Farm is committed to responsible farming practices, with a primary focus on the regeneration of soil fertility, achieved through the use of high-density grazing and organic compost amongst others. Using home-sourced vegetables and meats at their restaurants enhances self-sufficiency and reduces carbon emissions.

Long recognised for its sustainable approach to business, Spier invests in Growing For Good, initiatives that empower communities and unleash positive social and environmental change. Among these are the winery’s involvement with a youth development programme, the Pinotage Youth Development Academy, which seeks to educate and employ disadvantaged youth, providing practical work experience. With the Wildlands Conservation Trust, they launched Tree-preneurs in 2009. Encouraging environmental consciousness, this project teaches residents of some of the Western Cape’s most impoverished communities to care for indigenous plants which, once nurtured, can be exchanged for vouchers for food, clothing, agricultural goods, tools, bicycles and educational support.

Spier Wine Farm is also renowned for its significant contribution to the South African arts economy, supporting the arts community through projects that honour their African heritage and enriches its future. The Spier Art Collection is one of the largest contemporary art collections in the country, and is displayed throughout the farm.

Spicy bean chilli, Tandoori Chicken & rosemary-grilled lamb & vegetables, juicy rump or sirloin steak, flame-grilled to perfection. Fire-cooked hamburgers with sizzling bacon and melted cheddar cheese.
