The Wine:
This juicy Italian red from the Alba area of Italy’s Piedmont region exudes the essence of Piedmont with its vibrant character and expressive flavors.
A ruby-red wine with inviting aromas of red cherry and wild berries with a hint of almond. There is also a floral note of roses or violets, which gives a lovely perfumed quality to the wine. The cherry fruit character is present on the palate too, creating a sense of freshness and balance with the gentle acidity. Juicy, fresh and drinkable, this is a dry, light to medium bodied wine, offering a refreshing change to some heavier reds you can find in Italy – it’s less complicated than Barolo, from down the road for example. There’s also a harmonious balance of fruitiness and acidity on the palate, with soft tannins and a smooth, lingering finish. Versatile and food-friendly, it pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, from classic Italian fare like pasta with tomato sauce or pizza to grilled meats and aged cheeses.
Made from 100% Dolcetto grapes, this is a great every day sipping wine. It is very refreshing, partly due to the fruity nature of the Dolcetto grape, and also as it is aged in stainless steel barrels as opposed to oak, preserving the freshness. The name Dolcetto means ‘little sweet one’, which is a little deceptive as it’s a dry wine, but likely refers to the particularly plump, fruity nature of Dolcetto grapes and also of the resulting wines, which are delicious!
The Maker:
Founded in the heart of Piedmont’s Langhe region, Rocche Costamagna winery boasts a storied history dating back to the late 1800s. With a commitment to quality and tradition, the estate has meticulously tended its vineyards for generations, embracing sustainable practices to nurture the land and produce exceptional wines. Their Dolcetto d’Alba is a true reflection of this dedication, crafted from grapes harvested by hand from vineyards that benefit from optimal soil composition and microclimate. Through traditional winemaking techniques and modern expertise, Rocche Costamagna ensures that each bottle captures the essence of the terroir and the heritage of the region.
Today, the estate is overseen by Alessandro Locatelli, who has been managing the vineyards since the 1980s. Located in northern Italy, the winery is based in the La Morra commune, with around 14 hectares under cultivation.
Food Pairing:
This wine is a versatile everyday companion, pairing beautifully with roasted poultry and classic first courses such as bruschetta, arancini, or grilled vegetable antipasti. For a vegetarian or vegan option, tofu or earthy mushrooms make excellent matches, complementing the wine’s balance and character. Tagliatelle with Porcini Mushrooms, Herb-roasted Chicken with Lemon & Thyme & Caponata with Bread all work beautifully.
