The Wine:
Pale orange-gold in the glass, this quirky, medium-full-bodied orange wine delivers aromas of pear, apricot and white flowers, yellow apple, quince and a touch of citrus peel. For the palate, expect pronounced but silky tannins coming from the skin contact; it’s balanced, dry and lively with refreshing acidity. With further notes of quince, dried mango and orange rind, and a hint of almond and earthy complexity, this is a top-quality example of the genre. An orange wine with great elegance and length, finishing with lingering fruit and textural intrigue.
Made from 100% hand-picked Dimyat, a traditional Bulgarian white grape noted for aromatic fruit and freshness, the juice was fermented with skin contact for several weeks to extract colour and texture. After a long maceration, it was aged in oak and acacia barrels before bottling, preserving freshness while adding structure and subtle tannic grip typical of skin-contact wines.
No SO2 addition at any stage just topping the barrels with the same wine. Unfiltered.
The Maker:
One of the most exciting projects of the Bulgarian wine scene, Georgiev & Milkov combine fresh ideas and a modern approach with respect for the local winemaking traditions and the indigenous grapes. The resulting wines are effortlessly stylish and show a real sense of place.
In 2014 Petar Georgiev and Radostin Milkov started their own project. After gaining enough experience in various places around the world including the USA, New Zealand, China, Austria and Malta the two friends began working on the Bulgarian stage bringing in a bunch of fresh ideas. They decided it was high time that local varieties like Mavrud and Rubin should get the attention they deserve both by the wide public and the wine experts.
As a result, today, Georgiev & Milkov source their grapes from 40-year-old vineyards of Mavrud and another 40 year old vineyard of Rubin. Both plots are located in the Plovdiv region, in the Thracian Valley. This part of the country has ancient winemaking traditions dating as far back as 4,000 BC. In fact, Thracian Valley is even claimed to be the birthplace of Dionysus, the ancient Greek god of wine.
Petar and Radostin’s style allows for all their wines to feel modern and to drink elegantly, revealing the authenticity and beauty of the indigenous Bulgarian grape varieties.
