The Wine:
Giuseppe Sedilesu ‘s Cannonau Sartiu is a Sardinian red wine born in Mamoiada in Barbagia, in the province of Nuoro. It’s a full-bodied red with an intense ruby colour, and the nose is an elegant bouquet of red ripe fruit with spicy finish, coffee and tobacco. The mouth is complex, articulate, elegant, creamy, beautifully structured with a good persistence, and pleasantly tannic.
Clear notes of spice and ripe fruit, a dense and fresh palate with delicate and sweet tannins and a simply unique depth.
The wine is made from 100% Cannonau di Mamoiada grapes, which are harvested by hand in September. Once in the cellar they are pressed and fermented spontaneously. The wine then ages in steel tanks for a month.
The Maker:
This family-run winery was founded by Giuseppe and Grazia Sedilesu and today it is managed by their three children and their families. Located in the village of Mamoiada in the central province of Nuoro, this 13- hectare estate was purchased in 1975.
Mamoiada is a small Sardinian village situated in the heart of the Barbagia, most of all known for the traditional Mamuthones masks, which represent a significant cultural heritage. The tradition of the masquerades, which has been preserved over thousands of years, is rooted in the sacred rituals of the ancient local population of Mamoiada and is still performed today.
For years, they sold only in the villages close to Mamoiada. Then in 2000, when the children took over the winery, they hit on the idea of bottling and labeling their Cannonau. It was worth the experiment. During the following 10 years they doubled their wine production and built new cellars.
Food Pairing:
Excellent to combine with stewed and grilled red meats, game, lamb, pork, medium-aged cheeses, Gnocchi al ragù, Pasta all’amatriciana.
