The Wine:
Ruby red, with a nose of flowers and berries. This is a full-flavoured Puglian Negroamaro packed with youthful fruits. It has a distinctive acidity with a nice persistence through the palate.
Made following organic principles but not certified, this is a lovely wild yeast fermented Negroamaro. Farmed in the heart of Salento just a stone’s throw away from the sea. A combination of ripe blackberry, plum, black cherries supported with hints of tobacco and dark cocoa. A velvety wine with robust flavours that’s ready for any party.
Lovely, pure Negroamaro (a grape variety that has been somewhat eclipsed by the more prolific Primitivo, but that doesn’t mean it’s not just as delicious), with flora and berries on the nose. Velvety red, with concentrated red fruit on the palate, complemented by coffee and bittersweet chocolate notes. The flavours feel almost fortified, with a slight Port quality to this wine. Smooth and rich.
The nose is packed with dark berries, a touch of chocolate and florals. This is a lively wine, bubbly acidity brings freshness, which works well with ripe tannins and a sour cherry finish.
This wine’s tasting notes are leaning towards full bodied, low sweetness, with high acidity, very fruity, medium tannins, medium alcohol and some oak.
The Producer:
Puglia, in southern Italy, is known by wine lovers everywhere as the home of boldly-flavoured wines, made from grapes grown in vineyards where the sun beats down, and the Mediterranean breezes bring their own touch of magic. In the sub-region of Salento in Puglia, we find Tempo al Vino; an offshoot of Schola Sarmenti in Salento, Puglia, whose wines are crafted by young winemaker Sylvia Formigli. Fascinatingly, she maintains her vineyards with an ancient Puglian system – Alberello – which she believes allows the native varietals of Negroamaro and Primitivo to reach their full potential. It’s hard to argue with such convincing results, and Tempo al Vino’s wines are the very essence of their land, brought to life by a singular and unmissable vision. The native varieties of the region such as Negroamaro and Primitivo are promoted and made to a very high standard under organic farming principles.
With the influence of the Puglian sun and sparkling coastline as powerful as it is in Salento, it makes perfect sense to put nature in the driver’s seat when it comes to growing grapes. Natural fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tank then aged in tanks. No oak is used to retain freshness.
Food Pairing:
This rich and juicy southern Italian classic has long been regarded as one of the best food pairing wines out there, and when you pair it with a spicy Indian curry, a well-seasoned hunk of barbecued meat, or a vegetarian dish of beetroot and lentils, you’ll definitely be able to see why. It’s great with loads of vegan and vegetarian dishes of peas, beans, chickpeas, or lentils, too, and works wonders with blackened and charred meats, especially ribs and ribeye.
